Sarah Michelle Gellar Talks Foodstirs, Family Time, and More

Sarah Michelle Gellar is one busy gal. Aside from being a talented actress (long liveBuffy the Vampire Slayer!), she also co-owns Foodstirs, a culinary brand focused on creating premium baking kits and mixes for families. Hello brownie mix subscription kit on repeat? And on top of that, she still manages to put her adorable family first.
From her favorite way to spend date night with Freddie Prinze Jr. to awesome career advice, check out our exclusive interview with her below.
Tell us about your inspiration for Foodstirs?
Three years ago two of my best friends (and fellow moms) noticed that we were watching a society that was constantly becoming more connected while at the same time becoming more and more disconnected. Knowing the benefits of creating memorable experiences in the kitchen we were inspired by the trend of DIY food projects. We saw this as a great opportunity to develop a unique mission-driven brand.

  1. Foodstirs Mix Trio

We spent the next year creating our signature baking mixes — sourcing the best quality ingredients, and developing the recipes so they could be as tasty as possible. We knew clean labeling and transparency was very important to what we wanted to create. But most important to us was how we could use these products to help other people experience the true joy that comes when you unplug and connect.  We wanted other people to experience the same love and joy we found by being in the kitchen.

Brownie Popsicles

What is your favorite Foodstirs product to make with your family?
Honestly, that changes month to month. My son is the brownie guy, my daughter is cupcakes and my husband loves the cake pops (coming soon).
What future goals do you have for the brand?
We use the phrase “disruptive innovation.” We want Foodstirs to be the brand you think of and trust when it comes to making memories in the kitchen. The sky is the limit.
What’s your favorite meal to cook at home with your family?
I love Sunday dinners, the calmness before the crazy of a new week. We all eat together at five (and my kids usually do most of the cooking). It’s really a special time.
You’re an actress, entrepreneur, wife, and mom — how do you do it all and still make time for your family?
It takes a village, I am the first to admit that without the support of my family and friends I wouldn’t be able to do half the things I do. They are my inspiration and my biggest champions.
How do you unwind after a long day?
A book and hot bath is my definite go-to.

What does your ideal date night consist of?
We care more about the time we spend together than how we are spending it. A date can just be dinner at home after kids are in bed, or a great restaurant.
What’s the most inspirational piece of career advice you’ve ever received?
Every piece of advice is inspirational if you accept it. You never know where (or from whom) the next great piece of advice will come from.

What fuels you to keep going?
My motivation is always my kids. I want to show them that they can accomplish anything if they believe in themselves.
What is your favorite “calories don’t count” splurge?
I believe everything in moderation. If I deny myself something, I will only want it more.
What’s your go-to workout class?
I love it all and changing it up. From a dance class to jiu jitsu, to boxing to yoga and Pilates.
Is there a standout career lesson you learned the hard way?
Not everything happens the way you think it will. I thought [the show] Crazy Oneswould have gone on ten years but instead it led me here to Foodstirs and trying something completely different.
What has been your most favorite role in your acting career so far?
They are all truly unique experiences in different ways. It’s like asking to pick a child.
Did you ever want to give up at any point? If so, how did you get through it?
I look at failure like exercise. I want (my muscles) to fail so they can rebuild stronger and better than before. Someone just said to me “fail” stands for “first attempt in life” — I love it.
